Golf Classes vs. Golf Academies

My sister, like many people, is taking golf lessons to improve her game.  But what is the difference between golf classes and the degree programs offered at some golf academies?

  1. Golf classes are usually recreational, whereas golf degrees are usually career driven. Whether the student wants to pursue a pro golf career or a golf career in another facet of the industry, they usually have something specific in mind if they are getting their degree, rather than just taking a class or two for fun.
  2. Golf classes can be given at golf courses, resorts, and even rec centers, while degrees can only be pursued at accredited schools. A school has to meet certain educational standards in order to be accredited, which means that if you earn a degree from a golf school you know the school’s quality of education is up to par.
  3. Golf classes usually stand alone, while a golf degree program is a whole package. Golf classes might just focus on an intro for beginners, or perfecting specific skills for intermediate and advanced players.  A golf degree, however, should train the student on all parts of the game and the industry.

Although the subject might be the same, the fundamental purpose and lessons of a golf degree differs greatly from recreational golf classes.  Think about what you want to get out of it, and you should be able to decide which approach is right for you!
