What is a Free Credit Card?

In the mail, on television and even on your own personal home phone, there is no way to escape offers by credit card companies. Each company has different offers and specials available, making it seem that there are too many to choose from. Then when companies throw in the offer of a free credit card (tarjeta de credito gratis), it seems that the offer is too good to be true. However, a credit card that is free is actually the norm for credit card companies.
Free credit cards (tarjetas de credito) have no annual fee associated with them. Sometimes banks offer these types of cards when you decide to open bank accounts with their bank. However, many credit card companies do not require an annual fee with their cards. With so many credit card companies competing against one another offer a credit card with no annual fee helps the company stay competitive.
One alternative to a credit card is a debit card. In essence, it has just as many perks as a credit card that is free and can be used in a similar manner. The difference between the two is that a debit card links up with your bank accounts (cuentas bancarias), making it important to balance your checkbook.
